Fire Engineering Research

Shops and Shopping Centres
In the late 1980’s Jeremy Gardner worked on a project with the Building Research Establishment on smoke control in shopping centres. This led to the publication of the BRE Report BR 186 by HP Morgan and JP Gardner. This work is widely used internationally as the basis for the design of smoke control systems in shopping centres and other buildings.

Gordon Garrad carried out fire research with the BRE during the 1990’s and is co-author of the BRE Report BR 368, the latest BRE guide to smoke control.

In 1990 Jeremy Gardner led a project to construct a full scale two storey shopping centre test rig in Belgium and carried out a series of comprehensive fire tests.

In January 1998 JGA were commissioned by The Scottish Office to carry out a research project on the application of fire engineering in enclosed shopping complexes. As part of this research project JGA prepared a new set of fire regulations for shopping centres that was subsequently incorporated into the Technical Standards.

In February 1998 JGA completed a research project on occupant numbers at a major regional shopping centre. This involved accurate measurement of total occupancy numbers and density in key locations. The result gave occupancy data at 15 minute intervals from the quietest trading periods in the summer up to and including Christmas and the January sales. This was the first time research of this type had been carried out, and provided previously unavailable data, which has been applied in developing fire strategies for shopping centres.

Historic Buildings
In 1995 JGA were commissioned by Bath City Council to carry out a research project to study the application of fire engineering design methods for historic dwellings. This successfully led to a new approach to solving fire safety problems in Bath’s historic buildings.

Offices
During 1994 and 1995 Jeremy Gardner Associates worked with the Building Research Establishment on a joint research project to evaluate the results of a pilot study of full scale office fire experiments carried out at Cardington. This experimental work has resulted in the production of far more detailed data concerning fire growth rates, heat output, sprinkler performance and smoke production in offices.

Airport Terminals
In January and February 1997 JGA carried out a major research project for BAA to study 5 fullscale configurations of a shop unit. The results of this study have been incorporated into BAA standards and recent fire engineering guidance documents.

Underground Railway Stations
In July 1997 JGA had a short section of an underground train constructed at full scale to record fire growth and smoke development in the early stages of a fire.

Regulations
In 1998 Jeremy Gardner Associates were commissioned to carry out a technical review of the regulations for shopping centres in Scotland, using recent research and the latest fire engineering methods. This lead to the publication of new guidance, resulting in more efficient use of the space in shopping centres, greater flexibility in the use of materials and more reliable fire safety systems.
